Ilai Restaurant

Ilai is a Tamil style restaurant in Munich, Germany, designed to create a cultural experience through space, material, and memory. The interiors reinterpret elements of traditional Tamil homes to evoke a sense of familiarity and nostalgia for Indians while offering international visitors an introduction to the culture of Tamil Nadu. Mud pots, Dravidian inspired column murals, and a false ceiling derived from the Madras Terrace roof become spatial elements rather than mere décor. Oxide finished walls further reinforce the material character of South Indian architecture. Beyond the food, the space is intended to evoke memories, emotions, and a sense of travelling through time.
